The history of costa rican cuisine dates back to the indigenous people and their influence on today’s present-day food culture. These initial contributions include the tortilla, the tamales, beans, corn, potatoes, yuccas, squash, and other products. Rice and beans are the staple foundation of most meals and can be served in different ways for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Our fine dining experience took place on the grounds of Nayara Tented Camp. We made this reservation before traveling to Costa Rica and were required to put our card on file.
We were then emailed a form to select our meal preferences, which also consisted of vegetarian options. The romantic dinner was set to be at a restaurant where we would have the whole place to ourselves with a private chef cooking our meals on the spot. So exciting!
When we arrived, we were led through the forest to our very own gazebo with candles lit everywhere.
We were served 5 courses with lovely presentations from the staff member and chef. However, I regret to admit that the food looked better than it tasted. The dishes seemed delicious, but when we took a bite, the tastes were off and we didn’t enjoy it.
Along with the food being underwhelming, it also came out pretty slow, which wasn’t their fault. That is just something to keep in mind when dining with a private chef who is making your meals on demand.

Although we weren’t expecting this turnout, we still had a great time. The setting was beautiful and the staff was accommodating. They even gave us the option to play our own music.
We probably wouldn’t recommend this dining experience, especially for the price of ~$300 USD. There are other restaurants to choose from, so perhaps the food could be better. However, if you want to cross having a private catered dinner off your bucket-list, maybe you can give this a try and tell us if you have a different experience.
Did we have high hopes? Should we give Costa Rican food another chance? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Happy fine dining! Pura Vida!
